Concepts of learning devonn coleman psychology of learning psych/550 john barker june 3, 2013 concepts of learning throughout this document there will be an examination of the concepts of learning in psychology as well as a description of the ideas of learning.
Unlike more traditional learning models which concentrate on the ability to recall specific facts (such as the dates of an event or the twenty possible causes of a particular illness), conceptual learning focuses on understanding broader principles or ideas (what we call “concepts”) that can later be applied to a variety of specific examples.
Concept learning is one major learning type while teaching simple concepts with clear instances is not that difficult, teaching concepts border cases is difficult, and teaching complex concepts remains a major challenge.
Concept learning, also known as category learning, concept attainment, and concept formation, is defined by bruner, goodnow, & austin (1967) as the search for and listing of attributes that can be used to distinguish exemplars from non exemplars of various categories more simply put, concepts are the mental categories that help us classify. Concept learning may be simple or complex because learning takes place over many areas when a concept is difficult, it is less likely that the learner will be able to simplify, and therefore will be less likely to learn. I encourage instructors to take their teaching to the next level by learning more about these concepts through the provided links and through further reading so that every teaching opportunity is inspired and every student exceeds expectations.
